Sofia Vergara Reflects on Cancer Battle to Encourage Early Prevention

Sofia Vergara recently opened up about her past cancer battle on Instagram in an effort to encourage the importance of early prevention. On World Cancer Day, she reflected on being a “cancer survivor.” Vergara overcame Thyroid Cancer when she was 28 years old.

The America’s Got Talent judge posted an image of her first acting lesson after her treatment. In the photo, you can see Vergara’s surgery scar as she looks into a camera.

“At 28, Cancer was not a word I expected to hear. It was just a routine check-up, but the doctors found a lump in my throat, and that word became part of my story,” she wrote.

Vergara first opened up about her Cancer battle in 2011 after keeping it a secret for 11 years. In 2018, she received the Courage Award at a Women’s Cancer Research Foundation gala. The actress was recognized for assisting a young boy who needed cancer treatment which was unavailable at his local hospital. Vergara continued her work this past summer when she co-hosted a Stand Up To Cancer event. The organization has raised millions for Cancer research.

“This was my first acting class after diagnosis and treatment, and seeing the scar on my throat reminds me of how blessed I felt that day—and every day since,” Vergara wrote.

Vergara Urges Fans to Schedule Annual Check-Up

Although Thyroid Cancer is rare, women are more than four times more likely than men to be diagnosed with a small papillary thyroid cancer during their lives. Vergara’s early detection helped her beat the disease.

“I’m lucky and grateful to be in a position to share my story and say: early prevention is so important!!” she wrote to her nearly 25 million followers

After “countless hours in radiation treatments” as well as surgery, Vergara beat cancer. The actress has been thriving in Hollywood ever since. Her breakout role in Modern Family made her a household name.

Vergara has been bringing her energy to America’s Got Talent since Season 15 and has been the highest earning woman on Television since 2013. She is currently gearing up for her new miniseries Griselda as well as the next season of America’s Got Talent.
